Project Background and Goal
The Music Box Theatre’s marquee is a neighborhood landmark. The goal was a full restoration that kept the historic character of the original marquee while adding the visibility and flexibility of modern signage.
Challenges
Restoring a marquee is different from building one from scratch. Every decision had to respect the existing structure and the theater’s historic character, while still meeting current code and performance expectations.
Design and Engineering
We engineered a faux neon cast acrylic package that recreates the look of traditional neon without the fragility, paired with a digital message center sized and placed to work within the marquee’s original proportions.
Manufacturing and Fabrication
The open-face channel letters, acrylic push thrus, and faux neon components were fabricated in-house, matched carefully to the marquee’s existing scale and spacing.
Installation Approach
Installation on a working, occupied historic building called for careful sequencing and close coordination with the theater’s schedule, so the marquee stayed usable throughout the project.
Final Result and Impact
The restored marquee keeps the Music Box Theatre’s historic presence on the street while giving it a digital message center and faux neon detailing that reads clearly, day or night.
